Learning Theories and Enhancing Learning
The methods for communicating and learning have transformed with technology. Capturing and retaining the attention of today's learners is more difficult than ever before, because we are living in the digital era. Learners today are more adapted to learning from short videos and animations rather than a book or a text-heavy PowerPoint presentation.

Research on how the brain receives and processes information, is known as cognitive science. Cognitive science was applied in research studies of how our brain processes information when receiving information in the form of multimedia. This theory is called the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning.




The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning describes the way we learn through multimedia, according to Richard E. Mayer. Mayer developed the theory by using the Dual coding theory developed by Alan Paivio, and applied it as the basis for his research. The Dual coding theory suggests that the brain uses one channel for visual information and a separate channel for audio. Mayer's research lead to the Modality effect, which stated that learning, is significantly increased when information is presented through both channels.

Another reason to include a mix of text, images, and multimedia is to accommodate all learning styles. Everyone has his or her own way of learning. In order to incorporate all learning styles, consider including a variety of delivery options and activities. 



Learning styles are similar to the theory of multiple intelligences. This theory comes out of psychology to document the fact that humans have individual strengths and ways of thinking. Education should incorporate multiple delivery systems and activities in order to reach every type of learner.

Instructional Design Methods


The term “instructional design method” can often encompass models and learning theories. There is a lot of overlap between models and methods and sometimes they can be considered both or interchangeable. It may help to try to think of the models as a circular process of improvement and the methods as the format for which the learning activities and the design of the instruction is based upon. Instructional design methods typically integrate design models with learning theories.

Instructional Design Methods
According to The Encyclopedia of Distance Learning, “Design models can be defined as the visual representations of an instructional design process, displaying the main phases and relationships. Each phase has an outcome that feeds the subsequent phase. Currently, there are more than one hundred different ISD models.” (Boettcher, Justice, Schenk, Rogers, & Berg, 2005, p. 164)

The ADDIE model is a generic process, which stands for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. The ADDIE model begins with analysis of the learning or training. Once the needs of the student and objectives have been identified the design phase begins, followed by development phase, the implementation phase, and lastly the evaluation phase. This is a linear process initially but can be reused to evaluate existing courses to become a cycle. Most instructional designers use the ADDIE model to some degree.

There are several other instructional design processes that also stress the importance of constant application and assessment.

The Kemp Model describes a variety of essential features of instructional design instead of steps or stages. Using the analogy of architecture, imagine the models as different architectural structures. Commercial buildings function differently than residential buildings, but they also have common items in their framework such as a foundation, columns, beam walls, and a roof. Instructional methods also have common items for instruction such as motivation, previous experience, presentation, application, and transfer.

Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction model encompasses complementary components for task-centered learning.

In the Dick and Carey Model, developed by Walter Dick and Lou Carey in 1978, instruction is viewed as a whole instead of as separate parts. Various aspects of learning such as activities, delivery, and assessment communicate with each other to achieve the learning outcomes. Donald Kirkpatrick’s 4 Levels of Training Evaluation was published in 1994 in his book Evaluating Training Programs. It includes four steps 1) Reaction, 2) Learning, 3) Behavior and 4) Results. Blooms Learning Taxonomy is a vital resource for instructional designers, trainers and educators.  Blooms Taxonomy was developed by Benjamin Bloom and revised in 2001 by Anderson and Krathwohl in their book A taxonomy for learning, teaching, and assessing: A revision of Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. The reason for the revision was due to the confusion between a few of the verbs, for example knowledge and comprehension. As an online learning professional, you may have to review and choose an efficient model for your company or academic institution. You may discover that one model may not be conducive for all types of courses. You may need to customize a design model to fit specific content. You may also need to change design models in order to deliver the content appropriately to your target audience. You will need to choose the most effective method for your learners.

Instructional Theories
Instructional design models embed learning theories. Theories focus on how the learning is actually achieved. There are several learning theories that can be applied to instructional design models in order to design learning.

The constructivist theory appears as an underlying concept in various instructional theories.

Gagne’s instructional events model influenced Merrill’s Components Display Theory (1983), which is two-dimensional.

  
Merrill’s theory begins with the identification of the task analysis. What is it that the learner needs to know? The presentation should include the following content categories:  facts, concepts, procedures, and principles. The learner performance should be to remember, to use, and to find each category of content.

David Jonassen promoted the collaborative constructivist theory for online learning. Jonassen emphasized problem-based learning, where learners have control of their own learning. The instructor should only act as a coach in the learning process. Additionally, learners should work together to solve ill-structured problems such as those they would encounter in real-world scenarios.

Instructional design methods incorporate process, models, and theories. Therefore, it is the strategies that the instructional designer uses to blend the process, model, and theory that holds the significance for the actually learning of the material.

Educational Institutions are Legally Obligated to Comply with Section 504 and ADA

Educational Institutions are legally obligated to comply with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act. All materials in all format must be made available to the hearing impaired and visually impaired.

Section 504 of the The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 states: "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States, as defined in section 705 (20) of this title, shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance or under any program or activity conducted by any Executive agency or by the United States Postal Service." (US Department of Labor, n.d.)

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 "is the nation's first comprehensive civil rights law addressing the needs of people with disabilities, prohibiting discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunications." (EEOC, n.d.)

Students are protected under Section 504 and ADA. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) a component of the Department of Education (ED) enforces Section 504. Title II of the amendments to the regulations implement the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), published in the Federal Register at 73 Fed. Reg. 73006 on December 1, 2008. Institutes of Education have a legal obligation to provide ADA compliance for all materials.  Learning Institutions can be sued for not providing accommodations to disabled students. This is considered discrimination.

“Covered entities under the ADA are required to provide effective communication, regardless of whether they generally communicate through print media, audio media, or computerized media such as the Internet. Covered entities that use the Internet for communications regarding their programs, goods, or services must be prepared to offer those communications through accessible means as well.” (University System of Georgia, 2014)
 
To accommodate the disabled, educational institutions must provide methods for the disabled to receive the course materials. This includes alternative text or alt tags for images that visually describe the image, all text materials must be compliant with screen readers, all video and audio media components must be accompanied by a written transcript compliant with a screen reader.

Instructional Designers Make Designing Online Courses Easier

  1. Creates templates for SMEs/instructors to fill in with their content.
  2. Ensures online best practices, such as including submission text, discussions each week or module, and developing assignment milestones.
  3. Implements materials into the Learning Management System (LMS).
  4. Utilizes the LMS to making grading and updating easier. As a result the content will appear cleaner, links will be functional, and videos can be embedded. 
  5. Many Instructional Designers (such as myself) know HTML and Java which provides them with the ability to correct formatting, links, add audio, videos, etc. 
  6. Updates materials in the learning management system.
  7. Applies structure and consistency to the materials which, results in an easier learning experience for students.
  8. Students will have to ask their instructor less questions as a result and can focus on learning the materials.

  10.  Administers instructional design theories and pedagogy and andragogy learning theories into the course materials to make the content extremely effective.
  11. Uses grading rubrics to assess projects, assignments and discussions.

  13. Identifies processes and documentation that meet Higher Learning Commission (HLC) criterion.
  14. Verifies originality of materials, applies APA citation, and corrects grammatical errors.

Developing Portfolios in Education


Benefits and Challenges of Portfolio Development
       The benefits of portfolio development in education exceed the challenges for both students and instructors. The advantages of developing a portfolio according to Johnson et al. (2009), include providing another approach to assessing a graduate, a method for students and faculty to reflect on the learners progress, a way for teachers to pass learning onto their students, and a means for instructors to review and measure a student’s competencies on a global level (p. 6). Additional benefits include meeting accreditation requirements, state standards, preparing students for interviews, providing artifacts of their competency, and aid in advancing their careers (Johnson, Mims-Cox, and Doyle-Nichols, 2009, p. 4 & 5).
     There are a few challenges of portfolio development for students and instructors. The obstacles include that they require more energy and time for students to create and for an instructor to evaluate (Johnson, Mims-Cox, and Doyle-Nichols, 2009, p. 9). According to Johnson et al. (2009), they require that the student acquire additional skills to organize and utilize technology. They also require that the instructor develop an agreed upon grading rubric (p. 11). These challenges seem minor in comparison to the benefits of meeting standards, a more accurate means of assessing competencies, and preparing students for careers and advancement.
      Documentation is necessary in assessing learning outcomes for students pursuing a career in education to demonstrate that the student has the skills necessary to succeed in the field and as a means of assessment in comparing student work to determine if there are areas that need improvement (Johnson, Mims-Cox, and Doyle-Nichols, 2009, p. 9).  Students can then be recommended for credentialing, graduation, or career advancement. 
The Action Research Process Related to Portfolio Development 
      Action research is utilized in the process of developing a portfolio by students asking important questions such as to what audience should they develop the portfolio for, what pieces should they include, how can they organize their portfolio, and how can they improve their portfolio and pieces through the reflection process. This will allow students to assess themselves while expanding their knowledge at the same time. It also provides students with a view of how each piece fits together in the program and the larger picture of the program as a whole (Johnson, Mims-Cox, and Doyle-Nichols, 2009, p. 9).
      The stages of action research and how the process is related to how a student develops their portfolio is represented in Figure 2.1 - Cycle of Action Research Applied to Portfolio Development according to Johnson et al. (p. 22) The first stage of action research is identifying the problem where students analyze what pieces to include in their portfolio. The second stage, action planning involves how to assemble and arrange the pieces. The third stage is implementation and includes how many artifact should be compiled and where do they go in the portfolio. The next stage is evaluation where the student will decide if the pieces provide affirm their skills. The fifth stage is reflection where the student will consider if the portfolio defines their practice. Lastly is self-evaluation when the students how the portfolio can be improved in order to showcase their skills.
